Reducing Fuel Poverty with Solar and Heat Pumps – A Social Housing Success Story
The challenge: lower emissions, lower bills, no compromise on resident comfort
A leading UK construction and regeneration group appointed Carbon3 to deliver energy-efficient upgrades across homes managed by one of the UK’s largest social housing providers, with over 39,500 properties.
With rising energy costs and the urgent need to decarbonise the UK’s housing stock, the brief was clear: deliver low-carbon, low-cost energy systems that could make a real difference to residents, especially those at risk of fuel poverty.
The solution: integrated solar, battery storage, and heat pumps
Carbon3 designed and delivered a bespoke renewable energy rollout combining multiple technologies:
-
Solar PV and 5kW battery storage systems installed across 9 homes
-
Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) fitted in an additional 21 homes
Each installation was tailored to the specific needs of the property and its occupants. Detailed surveys were conducted to maximise system efficiency, while all work was carried out with full consideration for resident needs and minimal disruption.
Energy independence and bill reduction through smart storage
Battery systems were installed alongside solar panels to store surplus electricity generated during the day. This energy could then be used in the evening or during peak grid pricing periods, cutting both reliance on the grid and monthly utility bills for the residents.
All systems are remotely monitored by Carbon3, ensuring long-term performance and providing insights that help the client and their residents make informed energy decisions.
Resident-first delivery: safety, comfort, and communication
Carbon3 took a resident-led approach from day one. A dedicated Resident Liaison Manager worked closely with tenants throughout the project by holding regular meetings, addressing concerns, and ensuring installations were carried out respectfully and safely.
In one case, after a resident raised concerns about an internal battery unit, the Carbon3 team adapted the plan on-site, relocating the system outdoors and installing an additional protective shelter for added peace of mind.
Additional safeguards were also built in:
-
Bird protection installed with all PV panels to reduce future maintenance
-
IP-rated equipment for weatherproof reliability
-
Scaffold safety checks conducted across all sites
Multi-technology expertise from one trusted partner
Carbon3’s cross-trained engineers are certified to install and maintain solar PV, battery storage, and heat pumps, reducing the need for multiple site visits. This approach helped minimise disruption and deliver a more seamless experience for residents.
More than just an energy upgrade, this project demonstrates how tailored, resident-friendly renewable energy solutions can play a critical role in tackling fuel poverty, meeting net-zero targets, and improving long-term resilience in the social housing sector.
