Utilities & Data Centres.
Low-carbon energy systems for utilities and data centres.
Modern utilities and data centre operators face rising energy costs, grid constraints, and tougher sustainability targets. With data centres specifically having massive energy consumption, and requiring uninterrupted services, solar and battery storage are a prime solution.
Carbon3 delivers integrated solar, battery storage, EV charging, and long-term O&M support for utilities and data centres. Whether you’re running a regional utility network or a multi-MW data centre campus, we help reduce operational emissions while protecting uptime.
Solar PV for data centres.
While the UK government is not currently mandating that data centres and other utilities use renewable energy, it is often in your best interest. Powering your data centre with solar can mean easier planning permission and prioritisation for grid connections.
Data centres are also very energy intensive, with servers requiring cooling all day, every day, year-round. With growing demand from AI and digital services, most estates are exploring self-generation to stabilise cost and carbon.
We design and install high-capacity rooftop, ground-mount and carport solar systems engineered around grid constraints, and 24/7 operational requirements. On-site solar offsets a meaningful portion of non-critical load, reduces reliance on grid electricity and supports your sustainability reporting.
Not only can you offset a large amount of your operating costs, dependant on the size of the array installed, but you also will cut operational carbon in line with sector targets (75 percent clean power by 2025, 100 percent by 2030).
Ground mount and solar canopies.
If your roof does not have capacity for the amount of solar you need to install to offset your energy usage, consider installing on the ground, or on a canopy above your car park.
We can assess your energy needs and work out the ROI of different installations to get you the best returns. For example, installing a solar canopy can be more expensive than a ground mount, but it has the benefit of utilising unused space, sheltering staff or guests from the elements, and potential for EV chargers to be installed beneath.
EV charging for staff, fleets and visitors.
As utilities electrify fleets, and data centres expand employee transport hubs, EV infrastructure has become essential. We can install EV chargers that integrate with your solar panels, or standalone, to service your fleets and employees.
Our platform lets you set dynamic tariffs by user group and monitor consumption across multiple sites, ideal for organisations with high security requirements and tight reporting cycles. It also means you can open chargers to the public and charge them at a higher rate than other users to bring in another income stream.
PPAs for data centres.
For large energy users, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) offer a stable, long-term way to procure renewable energy without major upfront investment. PPAs are an option where our partners fund the installation and you purchase the energy from them at an agreed rate, usually lower than grid rates.
PPAs also means you don’t need to worry about insurance, maintenance, or having debt on your balance sheet. Through our PPA partners, we can help you find the best PPA for your site.
We guide you through grid connection impacts, export considerations and the business case for self-generation vs off-site procurement.
Operations & Maintenance.
O&M is where many data centre and utility projects fail. Carbon3 provides an O&M service specifically designed for high-availability environments. It means you don’t have to worry about the performance of your panels dipping, or becoming a safety risk from neglect. We are also carry out maintenance on panels not installed by us.
Carbon3 includes:
- 24/7 remote monitoring with intelligent fault alerts
- Fastest industry response times, as our O&M engineers do not work on installs and are available at short notice
- Fully stocked service vans and regional parts depots
- Safety, security and site-access training for data-centre protocols
- Performance reporting for ESG, carbon audits, and PPA compliance
With Carbon3, your systems operate safely, efficiently and with minimal downtime for decades, without you having to lift a finger.

Frequently Asked Questions.
If you can’t find the answers you need here, please contact our friendly team contact us.
Can solar affect data centre uptime?
Solar shouldn’t affect data uptime, as when you’ve used all the electricity generated by the panels, you’ll automatically pick up electricity from the grid.
How do we deal with grid constraints or long connection queues?
Many sites face export restrictions or multi-year connection delays. We model multiple configurations including limited-export solar, behind-the-meter systems, battery-assisted peak management, and flexible PPA structures that work within local DNO limits.
What O&M support do data centres actually need?
Critical-load sites need fast response, regular checks, and stocked spares. We provide 24/7 monitoring, regional stock, and engineers trained for restricted-access facilities.
Is solar suitable for all data centre types?
Yes, as both colocation and hyperscale centres can use solar generated electricity to offset your energy costs.
What are the benefits of installing EV chargers?
Data centres can benefit through enhancing their financial viability, sustainability credentials, and offering free charging to staff as an incentive.
