Why Decarbonisation Matters for Leisure Clubs
For many leisure clubs, energy is now one of the biggest overheads. Rising utility prices mean that electricity can represent up to a quarter of total running costs, putting pressure on memberships and services. Inflation and rising material and maintenance costs have also squeezed margins.
At the same time, members increasingly expect their clubs to take environmental action. Our client has committed to reaching net zero carbon by 2030, and with around 80% of its footprint coming from energy use, tackling electricity consumption was a priority.
The Project
Carbon3 partnered with the Club to install solar PV across several buildings, maximising the available roof space and generating a significant share of the Club’s energy needs. We installed 189.42 kWp on the Clubhouse, 52.92 kWp on the Grounds Building, 132.72 kWp on the Health Club, and 92.82 kWp on the Squash & Sports Hall.
By spreading generation across multiple sites, the Club can offset daytime electricity use in all its key facilities, from the gym to the dining spaces, making the most of on-site consumption.
Results
Since the solar arrays went live, the Club has reported substantial reductions in electricity bills. In peak summer months, savings reached around £8,000 per month, and the project is already ahead of its original four-year payback schedule. This not only frees up budget for other improvements but also gives the Club greater protection against future energy price rises.
The project has also made a real impact on carbon emissions, bringing the Club closer to its 2030 net zero target. For members, the panels are a visible commitment to sustainability, showing that the Club is serious about reducing its environmental impact.
Looking Ahead
The solar installations are part of a wider energy strategy that includes monitoring, audits, and further efficiency measures. The Club is exploring additional storage and energy-saving projects to build on the strong results already achieved.
Conclusion
This project shows how leisure facilities can turn sustainability into a strategic advantage. By investing in solar, The Club is cutting costs, reducing emissions, and strengthening its reputation with members. It’s proving that going green is good for both the planet and the bottom line.
