The Challenge

With rising operational costs and increasing pressure to meet Net Zero targets, NHS Trusts across the UK are seeking ways to reduce both emissions and energy expenditure. Hospitals, in particular, face unique challenges: 24/7 energy demand, and limited funding flexibility. For example, each wave of Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) funding has an installation deadline hospitals need to meet in order to keep their funding, which teams often struggle to deliver.

St Peter’s Hospital in Chertsey forms part of Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust’s commitment to creating a more sustainable healthcare system. As outlined in their Green Plan, the Trust is taking active steps to decarbonise its estate and ensure services are developed in an environmentally responsible way, supporting both patient wellbeing and long-term financial resilience.

Our Approach

Carbon3 designed and installed a 78.02 kWp solar PV system using high-quality, European-manufactured panels, ensuring optimal performance, traceable supply chains, and long-term reliability.

Working on a live hospital site required careful coordination to avoid disruption to patient care and staff operations. Our in-house project team managed all aspects of delivery, from structural assessments and DNO approvals to installation and commissioning, maintaining close communication with hospital facilities staff throughout.

The Results

  • 78.02 kWp of on-site renewable generation
  • Over £18,000 saved annually on energy bills
  • Significant reduction in carbon emissions supporting the Trust’s Green Plan
  • Zero disruption to hospital services during installation

The system will continue to deliver financial and environmental benefits for years to come, helping St Peter’s manage ongoing energy price volatility while supporting NHS-wide sustainability commitments.
