Hospitals are some of the most energy-intensive public buildings in the UK. They operate 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, supporting critical clinical services, research, and patient care. At the same time, NHS Trusts are under increasing pressure to reduce emissions, cut energy costs, and meet Net Zero commitments. Rising energy prices, capital constraints, and the fixed deadlines of Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS) and Great British Energy (GBE) funding add more difficulties.

Unlike many other sectors, hospital sites have unique technical and operational challenges. Roofs are often filled with essential plant and services, access can be restricted, and works must be completed without disruption to staff, or patients. This requires experience, sensitivity, and a delivery model built around the realities of live healthcare environments.

Carbon3 works with NHS Trusts across the UK to deliver solar PV, heat pumps, and EV charging infrastructure that is designed for sensitive, live sites. All work is carried out by our in-house teams, who are DBS-checked and trained to operate in clinical and secure settings.

Our projects are planned carefully with estates and facilities teams, ensuring that installation programmes run safely, and without interfering with hospital operations.

We manage every stage of delivery, from feasibility studies and DNO approvals, through to design, installation, and ongoing maintenance. System layouts are optimised to make the best use of available space, maximise generation, and ensure long-term performance.

For Trusts working to tight funding deadlines, we also focus on fast mobilisation and clear communication, so funding windows are met and carbon savings can begin as quickly as possible. We’ve been able to install over 1MW across 7 sites for one client in only 6 weeks to keep their funding.

We have delivered solar arrays on a total of 33 projects for the NHS in six months. Every pound saved on energy can be redirected into patient care, maintenance backlogs, or vital clinical services. Renewable infrastructure offers a reliable, long-term way to reduce both emissions and operational costs. Trusts must act quickly to turn allocations into live projects or risk losing their grants.

Our work across NHS hospitals and research facilities demonstrates that solar PV and EV infrastructure can be delivered at scale, at speed, and with no impact on patient care. By combining in-house design and engineering, DBS-checked delivery teams, and a deep understanding of clinical environments, Carbon3 gives NHS Trusts confidence that decarbonisation goals can be achieved without compromising day-to-day operations.

Across these projects, Carbon3 has delivered more than 4 MWp of solar capacity alongside extensive EV charging infrastructure. All installations were completed without operational disruption, and each is supported by robust monitoring and maintenance pathways. These assets are now delivering ongoing carbon savings and reducing energy bills for NHS Trusts across the UK.

By working through the NHS SBS Decarbonisation of Estates Framework, Carbon3 also provides Trusts with a fully compliant procurement route, speeding up mobilisation and ensuring all works meet NHS standards.

If your Trust has PSDS, GBE, or other funding available, Carbon3 can help you convert it into tangible energy and carbon savings. Our team has a proven track record of delivering low-carbon infrastructure in the most complex healthcare settings quickly, safely, and to the highest standards.
