Our client, a school in Hertfordshire, needed to reduce escalating energy costs while meeting its environmental responsibilities. With annual electricity consumption of 68,895 kWh, the school faced increasing financial pressure on its already tight budget.
The school had access to the Schools Condition Grant but needed a renewable energy partner who could design a cost-effective solar system, navigate the funding process and deliver a high-quality installation that would perform reliably for decades.
Carbon3 designed and installed a 49.8 kWp solar PV system funded through the Schools Condition Grant. We handled the entire project from initial feasibility assessment through to commissioning and ongoing maintenance.
Our approach covered funding application support to secure Schools Condition Grant approval, system design optimised for the school’s roof space and energy consumption patterns, and professional installation by our directly employed engineers during school holidays to minimise disruption.
The system is MCS certified, ensuring compliance with all grant requirements, and comes with a five-year monitoring and maintenance contract to protect the school’s investment.
The solar system generates 42.33 MWh annually (anticipated for 2026), and has consistently performed 2% above anticipated generation over the past three years. This delivers average annual savings of £11,700 for the school, dependent on self-consumption versus Smart Export Guarantee usage.
Importantly, there was zero upfront cost to the school through Schools Condition Grant funding, meaning our client now benefits from decades of predictable energy savings that protect them from future price increases. The installation also significantly reduces the school’s carbon footprint and provides a visible demonstration of environmental responsibility to pupils, parents and the wider community.
