In 2019, our client declared a climate emergency and committed to protecting the environment for future generations. The project formed part of a wider regeneration programme targeting up to 35% reductions in energy consumption, with a BREEAM Excellent target for new build and Very Good for refurbished buildings.
The university needed a single partner capable of managing a complex, phased solar PV installation across a mix of retrofit and newly constructed buildings, coordinating seamlessly with multiple trades over a two-year construction period. Each roof type required a bespoke approach to framing, fall protection and panel placement, with shading, warranty protection and tenant disruption all needing careful management.
Carbon3 delivered a full 360-degree service across all 20 blocks, including pitched and flat roof solar PV installations, bird protection, SFS Soter fall protection posts, and EV charging infrastructure.
Detailed upfront surveys ensured fit-for-purpose framing systems for every roof type, protecting structural warranties and minimising shading to maximise long-term output. Carbon3 coordinated across all construction phases without impacting other trades, and continues to provide ongoing maintenance across all installed technologies.
The university now generates clean, renewable energy across both campuses. This reduces fuel bills, lowers CO₂ emissions, and supports sustainable travel through on-site EV charging. The project contributed to our client’s broader BREEAM targets, with one site achieving a Very Good rating and the other new build management suite achieving Excellent. Ongoing maintenance ensures long-term performance and compliance.
Carbon3 provides end-to-end renewable energy delivery for complex, multi-site education projects, from initial survey and design through to installation and long-term maintenance. Our approach ensures clients meet their sustainability and compliance targets without added stress. Call us to find out more.
