Building on a Strong Environmental Legacy
Sustainability has long been at the heart of our client’s operations. The garden centre has invested heavily in environmental initiatives over many years, from extensive tree planting and habitat creation to rainwater harvesting, renewable heating technologies and on-site composting programmes. The installation of a new 347.4kWp solar PV system represents the latest stage in that journey, enabling the business to generate even more of its own renewable electricity directly from its rooftops.
Designed and installed by Carbon3, the system has been deployed across south-facing roofs, ensuring optimal solar generation throughout the year.
With a forecast self-consumption rate of 89.9%, the vast majority of the electricity produced will be used by the site itself, helping to reduce reliance on imported grid electricity. Any excess generation will be exported through the Smart Export Guarantee, creating an additional revenue stream while supporting the wider electricity network.
Why Garden Centres Are Ideal for Solar
Garden centres are uniquely positioned to benefit from solar energy. Their energy demand naturally aligns with solar generation, with electricity being consumed throughout daylight hours when panels are producing the most power.
Large retail spaces, restaurants, cafés, refrigeration equipment, air conditioning systems, and plant-growing environments all contribute to substantial daytime electricity consumption. Unlike many commercial buildings where energy demand peaks outside working hours, garden centres are normally busiest when the sun is shining. This allows a high proportion of generated energy to be used immediately on-site, maximising financial returns and reducing dependence on the grid.
For our client, this strong alignment between generation and consumption is reflected in the projected 89.9% self-consumption rate. By using almost nine-tenths of the electricity generated on-site, the business can capture the greatest possible value from every unit of renewable energy produced.
Complementing Existing Sustainability Initiatives
The new solar installation is a natural extension of the work already undertaken by the garden centre to reduce its environmental impact. The business has planted more than 80,000 indigenous trees, created over 15 kilometres of native hedgerows and developed extensive wildlife habitats across its estate. It also harvests rainwater for use within its nursery and farming operations, while ground source heat pumps provide more than 50% of its year-round heating requirements.
Alongside these initiatives, the company has committed to renewable electricity purchasing, peat reduction programmes, responsible recycling practices, and sustainable sourcing policies. The addition of a significantly larger solar array strengthens this already impressive environmental strategy, reducing operational emissions while generating clean electricity exactly where it is needed.
Long-Term Financial and Environmental Benefits
As energy costs continue to fluctuate, generating electricity on-site provides businesses with greater certainty and control over future expenditure. The new 347.4kWp system will help shield our client from rising electricity prices while delivering meaningful carbon savings year after year.
The benefits extend beyond financial performance. By producing more renewable electricity on-site, the business further reinforces its commitment to environmental responsibility and demonstrates how commercial organisations can take practical action towards a lower-carbon future.
Looking Ahead
For a business whose success is closely connected to the natural environment, investing in renewable energy is both a logical and meaningful step. The new 347.4kWp solar PV installation not only supports the day-to-day energy requirements of the garden centre, but also strengthens a long-standing commitment to sustainability, conservation and responsible resource management.
With exceptional south-facing roof space and an outstanding forecast self-consumption rate, the project showcases how garden centres can turn unused roof areas into valuable energy-generating assets, delivering financial savings and environmental benefits for decades to come.
